Red Wings cut 10 from Training Camp Roster

The Detroit Red Wings reassigned four players and released another half dozen from  tryout agreements on Saturday (Sept. 25).

The following players have been sent to Grand Rapids to begin the season with the Griffins:

Martin Frk – A 22-year-old 6’1,” 194 lbs. forward and native of Pelhrimov, Czech Republic, Frk was selected in the Second Round (49th Overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He played his junior hockey with Halifax in the QMJHL and turned pro in 2013-14, splitting his time between Grand Rapids and Toledo of the ECHL in the two seasons since. Last season in 32 games with the Griffins and 29 with the Walleye in Toledo, he totaled 50 points (29g, 21a) and 32 penalty minutes in 61 games.

Marek Tvrdon – A 22-year-old, 6’2,” 209 lbs. forward from Nitra, Slovakia, Tvrdon was selected in the Fourth Round (115th Overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Red Wings. He played his junior hockey with Vancouver and Kelowna in the WHL and has split time between Grand Rapids and Toledo since turning pro. Last season, Tvrdon played 51 games in Grand Rapids and 24 at Toledo, combining the two to total 53 points (16g, 37a) and 30 penalty minutes in 75 games.

Richard Nedomiel – A 22-year-old, 6’4,” 234 lbs. defenseman from Prague, Czech Republic, Nedomiel was selected in the Sixth Round (175th Overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Red Wings. He played his junior hockey with Swift Current in the WHL and has spent time in both the AHL and ECHL since turning pro. Last season, Nedomiel played 49 games with Toledo in the ECHL, picking up 14 points (3g,11a) and 56 penalty minutes in 49 games.

Jake Paterson – A 21-year-old, 6’1,” 176 lbs. goaltender from Mississauga, ON, Paterson was selected in the Third Round (80th Overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Red Wings. Paterson played in the OHL with Saginaw and Kitchener and finished the past two campaigns with stints in Grand Rapids and Toledo respectively. He is expected to begin this sesason in Toledo.

The following players were released from tryout agreements by the Red Wings:

Kurt Etchegary – A 20-year-old, 5’11,” 190 lbs. forward from St. John’s, NL; Etchegary played the previous four seasons with the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL, the final two as the team’s captain. Last season Etchegary collected 60 points (25g, 35a) and 90 penalty minutes in 65 games.

Jeff Hoggan – A 37-year-old 6’1,” 194 lbs. forward from Hope, BC, Hoggan has been the captain of the Grand Rapids Griffins for the past three seasons and he is expected to clear waivers and return to the Griffins for another campaign. Last year, Hoggan collected 31 points (14g, 17a) and 39 penalty minutes in 76 games with the Griffs.

Joel Rechlicz – A 28-year-old, 6’4,” 220 lbs. forward from Broofield, WI, Rechlicz has played pro for the past eight seasons, excluisvely in the AHL for the past six as well as a couple of NHL auditions with Washington Capitals and NY Islanders. Last season Rechlicz appeared in just 20 games with the Iowa Wild, picking up one goal and 60 penalty minutes.

Jared Nightingale – A 33-year-old, 6’3,” 205 lbs. defenseman from Jackson, MI, Nightingale was officially a member of the Toledo Walleye last season but played games on loan to no less than five different AHL teams. He played 24 games with the Walleye and another 42 with the various AHL clubs — the longest stint a 20-game stay with the Norfolk Admirals.

Nathan Paetsch – A 32-year-old, 6’1,” 198 lbs. defenseman, from Humboldt, SK, Paetsch was selected in the Second Round (58th Overall) by the Washington Capitals in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and re-selected in the Seventh Round (202nd Overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. He has been an Assistant Captain with the Griffins for the previous three seasons and the team hopes he will clear waivers and return this season. In 75 games with the Griffs last season, Paetsch collected 38 points (8g, 30a) and 42 penalty minutes.

Andrew Prochno – A 23-year-old, 5’11,” 190 lbs. defesneman from Minnetonka, MN, Prochno finished his fourth and final season at St. Cloud State University last season as an Assistant Captain. In 36 games, Prochno totaled 15 points (3g, 12a) and 12 penalty minutes.

These moves leave the Red Wings with 46 players still in camp including 28 forwards, 14 defensemen and four goaltenders.
