Wings return Svechnikov to Screaming Eagles

Following last night’s pre-season game with the Chicago Blackhawks, the Detroit Red Wings this morning have assigned its top pick in this summer’s draft to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Evgeny Svechnikov, selected in the First Round (19th Overall), by the Wings is a native of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk in Russia but he played last season with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the QMJHL, scoring 78 points (32g, 48a) and 70 penalty minutes in 58 games. Svechnikov returns for the 2015-16 season already underway and he likely will also be a key piece on Team Russia at the World Junior Tournament at Helsinki over the Christmas break.

With the move, the Wings have now trimmed its Training Camp roster to 56 players including 33 forwards, 18 defensemen and five goaltenders.

Franzen returns

The highly aniticipated and for some unexpected return of Johan Franzen will take place tonight as the 35-year-old Swedish forward is slated to be in the lineup as the Wings take on the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight (Sept. 24) at the Joe Louis Arena. The game will be his first since Jan. 6 as he has been recovering for concussion related symptoms.
