Waterloo defender, Sorenson, commits to Alabama-Huntsville

Waterloo, Iowa (Courtesy Waterloo Black Hawks)–Waterloo Black Hawks’ defenseman Hank Sorensen has committed to play for the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers beginning in the 2018/19 season, the Hawks announced Monday (July 10, 2017).

Sorenson joined Waterloo on a fulltime basis for the 2016/17 season and appeared in 41 regular season games.  Visiting the Chicago Steel on November 12, in the midst of his fourth appearance of the year, Sorensen scored his first United States Hockey League goal.  He added three more, plus ten assists, for 14 points during the campaign.  Sorensen’s goal and point totals ranked fourth among Black Hawks defensemen.  He also skated in all eight Waterloo postseason games, charting one assist.

Former Black Hawk Brandon Salerno was a freshman at Alabama-Huntsville last winter.  The Chargers are members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.  They have played continuously at the NCAA Division I level since 1998/99.

Sorensen’s commitment is now part of Waterloo’s player development success story from 2016/17.  He is one of 22 players from last season’s roster to choose a Division I program.  In addition, four players who skated for the Hawks were chosen last month during the 2017 NHL Draft.  At the NHL level over the winter, four former Waterloo players made their league debuts among eight Hawks alumni skating at hockey’s highest level.
