Steel Coach, Steward moving to Michigan Tech

GENEVA, ILLINOIS  (Courtesy Chicago Steel) —The Chicago Steel announced Tuesday (June 6, 2017) that Associate Head Coach Dallas Steward will join the Michigan Tech University Huskies (WCHA) as an assistant coach.

Steward heads to the NCAA Division I ranks after helping lead the Steel to its first Clark Cup Championship two weeks ago today.

“I am so proud of what we have accomplished the last two years with the Chicago Steel,” said Steward. “I want to thank Dan Muse and the hockey staff for their great efforts in not only developing the players but also the coaches. I also want to thank our owner Larry Robbins, Steel President Dan Lehv, and the front office for building a great organization in such a short time.

“To win the championship is every team’s dream at the beginning of the year,” continued Steward. “The culture we built helped accomplish this goal with the strong leadership and talent from our players.”

Steward, 37, joined the Steel in 2015 as Associate Head Coach. In addition to winning the Clark Cup last month with Chicago, he also won the Clark Cup in 2015 as an assistant coach and scouting director with the Sioux Falls Stampede, and in 2000 as a player with the Green Bay Gamblers. His other coaching experience includes serving as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge in Ontario, Canada. Steward played four years of college hockey in the WCHA with University of Alaska Anchorage before embarking on a seven-year professional hockey career in the ECHL and the former Central Hockey League (CHL).

“Dallas is extremely deserving of this opportunity to join the Michigan Tech hockey staff and will be missed by everyone here in Chicago,” said Steel Head Coach Dan Muse. “He has done an excellent job and has had remarkable success as a member of this organization in addition to the success he had in Sioux Falls. Dallas has held many different roles and responsibilities in his six years coaching in the USHL and is extremely prepared to help Michigan Tech in their continued success.”

Steward will be behind the Huskies bench alongside Head Coach Joe Shawhan.

“We’re very excited to have an individual the caliber of Dallas join our program,” Shawhan said. “He’s had success follow him being part of two of the last three USHL Championships. He has a strong recruiting network and his character and ethics will be a great addition to our hockey program.”

A search is underway to fill the vacated assistant coaching spots on the Steel bench left by the departures of Steward and Peter Mannino, who last week accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
