Walters’ OT winner lifts Walleye to 2-0 series lead

Dane Walters’ second of the night, fired exactly one minute into overtime, lifted the Toledo Walleye to a 4-3 edge against the visiting Fort Wayne Komets and a 2-0 lead in their East Coast Hockey League Central Division Final series at the Huntington Center in Toledo Saturday (April 29, 2017).

Toledo never trailed in the game, but never got more than a goal away from the Komets either as the visitors battled back three times to tie the contest.

ECHL Rookie of the Year, Tyson Spink opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the game, but that ultimately stood up as the lone goal of the opening 20 minutes.

Gabriel Desjardins tied the score 8:40 into the second but the Walleye again carried a one-goal cushion out of the period as Kyle Bonis triggered his seventh of the post season 45 seconds from the end of the frame.

Kyle Thomas evened it up for the Komets again 4:07 into the third before Walter put the Walleye in front again with 6:25 to go.

Cody Sol forced the extra period with his goal to tie it at 3-3 just 20 seconds from the third period horn.

The same two goalies went to the crease as the previous night, Jeff Lerg collecting his sixth win of the post season with a 38 save effort while Pat Nagle turned aside 26 for the Komets.

The series will move to the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne for Game 3, scheduled for Wednesday (May 3)
