Panarin’s first lifts Blue Jackets past Rangers

Artemi Panarin’s first goal with the Columbus Blue Jackets stood up as the game winner and Sergei Bobrovsky turned in a 37-save effort as the host Jackets used a third period rally to pull out a 3-1 win against the Rangers at Nationwide Arena on Friday (Oct. 13, 2017).

Kevin Hayes opened the scoring for the Rangers 5:25 from the opening period for the Rangers but that was the only shot to get by Bobrovsky on this night.

Seth Jones pulled the Blue Jackets even from Zach Werenski and Alexander Wennberg in the final minute of the second period with what appeared to be a harmless wrister fired at the next from a bad angle. Panarin’s game winner came 7:25 into the final frame from Jones and Werenski and Lukas Sedlak clinched the win with an empty netter six seconds from the horn assisted by Ryan Murray.

Henrik Lundqvist handled 40 of 42 shots in goal for the Rangers who fell to 1-4-0-0 with the loss.

The win boosted the Jackets’ season record to 3-1-0-0 but the team had little time to celebrate, boarding a plane for St. Paul immediately after for a Saturday night road game against the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center.

The Jackets will stay on the road to face the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday (Oct. 17) before returning home for its first of four straight at the Nationwide Arena, against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Oct. 19.
