Lerg shutout helps clinch Walleye series win

Jeff Lerg provided shutout goaltending, stopping all 24 of the Fort Wayne Komets shots he faced as the Toledo Walleye picked up an emphatic 5-0 win to clinch the East Coast Hockey League’s Central Division final with a 5-0 win at the Huntington Center in Toledo Saturday (May 6, 2017).

Simon Denis opened the scoring 5:20 into the contest and wrapped it up with 7:52 to play for the Walleye. Tylor Spink’s first period goal gave the home team a 2-0 edge heading to the second where A.J. Jenks added another with his fifth of the post season. Tyson Spink scored his sixth of the playoffs early in the third.

Pat Nagle stopped 23 shots in goal for the Komets who go to the ECHL playoff sidelines with the loss.

The Walleye move on to the West Conference championship series against either the two-time defending Kelly Cup champion Allen Americans or the Colorado Eagles who hold a 3-1 lead in the series heading to Game Five in Texas on Sunday (May 7).
