Iron Rangers fall in shootout against Miners

The Minnesota Iron Rangers saw a Superior International Junior Hockey League win elude them at the Hoyt Lakes Arena Thursday (Oct. 12, 2017) as the English River Miners rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the final 10 minutes and ultimately captured a 3-2 shootout win.

The Iron Rangers appeared in control after breaking a scoreless tie with middle period goals from Clayton Brown, 20, from Virginia, MN and Bryce Litke, 18, from Manitoba.

Tyler Thompson, 18, from Victoria, MN kept a clean crease, turning aside 22 shots through the first two periods but Kyle Rosolowski, 20, from Alberta found an opening for the Miners with 9:16 to play and Colton Cameron, from Alberta evened it with 4:34 to go.

Teams settled nothing through overtime and Ethan Wong, 18, from Alberta clinched the win with his second-round goal as River Miners goaltender Westin Cardwell, 18, from Alberta turned aside shots by Zac Horn, 18, from North Carolina, Mark Sanchez, 20, from Texas and then Brown to secure the victory.

The win pushed the Miners to 2-4-0-0, into a fifth place tie with the Iron Rangers who fell in a shootout for the second time in and sit at 1-4-0-2.

The Rangers will be back in action Saturday (Oct. 14 when the Fort Frances Lakers pay a visit.
