Icehawks capture fourth straight win at Motor City

The Tri City Icehawks extended its winning streak to four games with a 7-1 United States Premier Hockey League-Midwest road win against the Motor City Hawks Friday (Oct. 2).

In other league play on the same night, the Kalkaska Rhinos scored last and held off the Michigan Wild 7-6 on home ice; the St. Croix Valley earned a home win against rival Forest Lake Lakers 5-3; the Chicago Cougars remain undefeated with a 7-4 win on home ice against the Decatur Blaze, the host Dells Ducks whipped the Marquette Royales 10-1 and the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings picked up the lone road win of the evening, edging the host Illiana Blackbirds 3-2.

Hawks 1 at Icehawks 7

Trevor Pode, 19, from St. Clair Shores, scored late in the first period to get the Hawks on the board and cut into a 2-0 Icehawks lead at the McCann Arena at Grosse Pointe, MI but that was the only shot of 20 that would elude Icehawks goaltender Cody Foster, 20, from California.

The Icehawks widened the gap with another two goals in the second period and put it away with another three down the stretch.

Matteo Ybarra, 16, from Rochester Hills, MI led the offensive charge with two goals and three assists for the Icehawks, Benito Posa, 16, from Grand Blanc, MI adding a goal and three helpers. Cameron Smith, 16, from Grand Blanc, MI picked up a goal and two assists while Addison Edwards, 20, from Arizona put up a goal and a helper. Other Icehawks goals came from Krisjanis Reinfelds, 19, from Latvia and Sam Hanson, 18, from Alaska.

Ryan Budnick, 17, from Shelby Twp., MI and Stephan Demmers, 17, from Clawson, MI,  both took a turn in goal for the Hawks, combining to turn aside 28 shots.

Wild 6 at Rhinos 7

The host Rhinos appeared to have things in control when it carried a 4-0 cushion out of the opening period at the Kalkaska Kaliseum, but three goals in 3:41 in the middle part of the second period suddenly had the Wild within a goal at 5-4. Both teams added one more in the second and the Wild pulled even at 6-6 3:19 into the final frame.

Teams were even for all of 62 seconds before Darren Aikens, 20, from Florida put the Rhinos in front for good.

Robert Cerepak, 20, from New Jersey paced the offense with two goals and three assists for the Rhinos, Matt Culot, 19, from Massachusetts also scoring a pair and adding an assist. Sean Schirripa, 19, from Pennsvylvania collected a goal and an assist and the other other goal came from Kyle Lott, 18, from Elkhart, IN. Alexander Srague, 17, from Arizona chipped in with a couple of assists.

Ryan Radwan, 17, from Canton, MI netted a hat trick for the Wild, Frank Barabas, 17, from South Lyon, MI collecting a goal and assist and other goals for Blake Anderson, 19, from White Lake, MI and Nic Fernandez, 18, from White Lake, MI.

Austin Hannaford, 19, from Alberta turned aside 41 shots to nail down the win for the Rhinos, Dean Bucholz, 16, from Dearborn Heights, MI facing a barrage and stopping 77 at the opposite end.

Lakers 3 at Magicians 5

Three unanswered second period goals turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 margin for the Magicians and another 5:15 into the final frame added a little more insurance before the Lakers hit the board with the final goal just past the halfway mark.

Jared Mikelson, 18, from Inver Grove Heights, MN led the charge for the Magicians with a couple of goals and an assist and Peter Karavos, 20, from Rolling Meadows, IL added a goal and two helpers. Lane Eliason, 20, from Superior, WI had a goal and a set up, Yanick Zehnder, 18, from Switzerland two assists and the other goal came from T.J. Deming, 19, from Savage, MN.

Zachary Remers, 20, from Florida had a goal and assist for the Lakers with other goals added by Caleb Santa Maria, 19, from Georgia and Anton Minaev, 19, from Russia.

Jason Footlick, 18, from California made 29 stops to pick up the win in goal for the Magicians while Daniel Demaria, 19, from New York saved 27 for the Lakers.

Blaze 4 at Cougars 7

It was the Blaze on the board first at the Edge Arena in Bensenville, up 2-0 after a period, but the Cougars rallied back to tie it with a pair in the second and grabbed control with four in the first 6:12 of the third.

Jonathan Dagnal, 19, from Pennsylvania, Ryan Hutchinson, 20, from Chicago and Nik Kropp, 18, from Northbrook, IL each collected a goal and assist in the game for the Cougars, Hunter Schiffman, 18, from Rockford assisting on a pair. Other goals came from: Sam Trapp, 17, from Park Ridge, IL; Gavin Nickerson, 20, from Oregon; Mike Watson, 19, from Colorado and Cody Hrabak, 18, from Palos Hills, IL.

 

Justus Kree, 19, from Medford, WI and Ryan Redpath, 20, from Decatur scored two each for the Blaze.

Dylan Gillis, 18, from Naperville, IL stopped 16 shots to collect the win in goal for the Cougars while the Blaze sent both Tyler Hubbard, 17, from Calumet, IL and Nolan Slager, 19, from Zeeland, MI into the goal, the pair combining to stop 45 shots.

Royales 1 at Ducks 10

The Ducks scored three unanswered goals in both the first and second periods and added three more in the third before Sam Weidenbaum, 19, from Arizona fired the only shot of 19 to beat Ducks goaltender Jared Young, 20, from Colorado with 7:14 to play.

David Kaplan, 18, from Vernon Hills, IL fired a hat trick to lead the Ducks, Felix Conrads, 20, from Naperville, IL and Victor Morgan, 19, from South St. Paul, MN both adding two goals and an assist. Lucas Smith, 19, from Alberta set up a couple and Alex Radcliffe, 19, from Masschusetts added a goal and assist with other goals for Jadyn Munnelly, 19, from Omaha, NE and Dylan Van Syckel, 20, from Columbus, WI.

Kyle Mugica, 20, from California and Joshua Soule, 19, from Texas each took a turn in goal for the Royales, combining to stop 46 shots.

Riverkings 3 at Blackbirds 2

The closest game of the night saw Anthony DiDiana, 20, from Elmwood Park, IL giving the Blackbirds a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first before the Riverkings struck back with a pair in the second and another early in the final frame.

Tyler Carey, 20, from Sun Prairie, WI; Kevin Van Bokkelen, 18, from Hudson, OH and Darius Radzisewski, 18, from New Jersey scored the Riverkings goals before Dominic Poya, 20, from Crown Point, IN pulled one back before the five minute of the third, but the Blackbirds could get no closer, Link Ferch, 19, from Dallas turning aside 25 to nail down the win in goal for Rapids.

Alexander Meagher, 20, from Pierre, SD also stopped 25 shots for the Blackbirds.

All six of these matchups will be replayed Saturday (Oct. 3) — four of them at the same arena. The Cougars will move from the Edge to the Sears Center while the Magicians and Lakers head over to Forest Lake to wrap up a home-and-home set.
