Eagles renew cross-border rivalry Friday night

The Soo Eagles have returned to the suddenly bolstered Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League this season and will open by reigniting its cross-border rivalry with the Soo Thunderbirds.

The Eagles will be the first to clear customs, playing the Thunder at the Essar Arena on the Canadian side of the International Bridge as all 12 teams in the NOJHL head into action with their respective season openers on Friday night.

On Saturday the same two teams will square off at Pullar Stadium on the American side. This will be the first of several clashes between these two teams this season and they generally guarantee a large and ‘very interested’ group of spectators.

The Eagles, last played in the NOJHL in the 2011-12 season, playing the past three campaigns in the North American Hockey League, twice playing into the second round of the post season with a non-playoff season in its middle campaign.

In 2010-11, the Eagles won the NOJHL league Championship.
