Zenone gets it done in OT

The first Midwesthockey.info season is underway!

We’re easing into the regular season with a Labor Day Weekend start that includes just a trio of games from the NA3HL.

Wooster Oilers 4 Southern Tier Express 3 (ot)

Two of the games took place on Saturday, including a successful NA3HL debut by former Minnesota Junior Hockey League team, the Wooster Oilers as Mike Zenone triggered his second of the game 2:27 into the first 3-on-3 overtime period in NA3HL history to live his team to a 4-3 win.

The Oilers paid a visit to Jamestown, NY and made its presence felt quick as Tyler Houmard pounded a Brandon Scholze feed home to open the scoring before the end of the game’s first minute.

However, two goals just a littl over a minute apart in the middle part of the period had the host Express up 2-1 after a period.

Isaiah Crawford scored the lone middle period goal, extending the home team’s lead, but the Oilers stormed back in the third, Will Schober’s unassisted marker 8:32 in getting the visitors within one and Zenone scoring his first of two with 5:57 remaining.

Ryan Spencer picked up the win in goal for the Oilers, stopping 30 of 33 shots faced while Cody Gibson was kept busy in the Express goal, handling 42 of 46.

Cincinnati Thunder 2 Pittsburgh Vengeance 6

The Thunder made the trek to Pittsburgh to start its season and saw the opener slip away from them after Cobin Sanborn opened the scoring for the visitors 66 seconds into the game.

Vengeance scored the next four, including three straight off of the stick of Ryker Barber.

Marc Anderson pulled one back for the Thunder with just under six minutes to go in the second to make it a 4-2 game, but Pittsburgh put this one away with two more unanswered in the third.

The same two teams were scheduled to square off again early Saturday (Sept. 6) morning to wrap up the league’s first weekend of play
