Weekend split includes Anderson’s 400th.

After five straight on the road, the Chicago Wolves, American Hockey League affiliate of the St. Louis Blues split a pair of home games this past weekend (Nov. 20-22), dropping a 2-1 decision to Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday but rebounding with a 2-1 win on Sunday.

Griffins 2 at Wolves 1

Saturday’s 2-1 loss at the Allstate Arena was the team’s third straight as Andreas Athanasiou, just back from his first call up with the Detroit Red Wings, scored both of the Grand Rapids goals. Both of them came with assists for Eric Tangradi and Tomas Jurco.

The Griffs scored the only goal of the first period and the other came with just 5:24 to play to double the visitors’ margin.

Yannick Veilleux scored the lone goal of the contest for the Wolves, his fourth of the season with a little less than four minutes to play, shattering the shutout bid of Tom McCollum who stopped 27 of 28 in the game. Peter Harrold and Andre Benoit picked up the assists.

Pheonix Copley stopped 14 of 16 in goal for the Wolves, dropping his record to 3-2-1 so far this season while the team fell to 8-3-1-1.

Saturday was ‘Adopt A Dog Night’ at the Wolves game and also Military Appreciation Night — the home team playing in some special camo-style jerseys with grey and black as the primary colors.

Wild 1 at Wolves 2

The Wolves struck back 24 hours later with its own 2-1 win against the Minnesota Wild’s AHL affiliate.

The Wolves once again didn’t hit the scoreboard until the final period as teams played through a scoreless opening period and Zack Mitchell scored his fourth of the year for the Wild 5:25 into the middle frame.

The Wolves failed to put one of its 23 first two period shots by Iowa keeper, Leland Irving and found itself outscored 1-0 in the middle frame despite a 16-3 edge in shots.

A 19-shot third period finally brought dividends as Eriah Hayes evened things in the fifth minute of the frame from Evan Trupp and Veilleux, setting the stage for Jacob Doty who pulled the trigger on the game winner with 7:03 to go. Cody Beach and Jordan Schmaltz collected assists on the goal.

Jordan Binnington picked up the win in goal with an 18-save effort while the Wolves peppered Irving with 42 shots.

The Wolves celebrated ‘Star Wars Day’ at its game and also wrapped up a weekend Canned Food Drive.

The team will now prepare for a busy post-Thanksgiving weekend, making the quick trip to Rockford on Friday, before returning home for Saturday and Sunday matches against the San Antonio Rampage.
