Warning pair leads Mallards past Oilers
Sam Warning opened and closed the scoring at the iWireless Center in Moline, IL helping the host Quad City Mallards to a 3-2 edge against the visiting and previously undefeated Tulsa Oilers on Saturday (Oct. 29) in one of six East Coast Hockey League games involving Midwest based teams.
In other Saturday action: Rapid City Rush collected its first win of the season, downing the host Alaska Aces at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage; after dropping a lopsided 7-1 decision at SNHU Arena the previous evening, the Cincinnati Cyclones turned the tables on Saturday with a 4-2 win against the host Manchester Monarchs; the Toledo Walleye finished a weekend road sweep at Norfolk Scope with a 4-1 win against the Norfolk Admirals; Allen Americans went to overtime to take a wild one with a 7-6 edge against the Indy Fuel at Indiana Farmers Coliseum and the Kalamazoo Wings were clipped by the Wheeling Nailers 8-1 at WesBanco Arena.
Oilers 2 at Mallards 3
Warning’s first goal was the lone marker in the first period but Christophe Lancelette responded with the lone middle period tally and teams were even at 1-1 heading to the final 20 minutes.
Chris Francis put the Ducks in front again 1:57 into the third period but Phil Brewer struck back for the Oilers with his goal at 7:28. Warning fired his second 61 seconds later and that wrapped up the scoring in this one.
C.J. Motte stopped 28 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Mallards and Brody Hoffman made 28 saves as well for the Oilers.
Rush 5 at Aces 1
A pair of goals by Ryan Walters and a solid 28-save goaltending performance from Kent Patterson helped the Rush break into the win column and earn a split in its series at Anchorage.
Walters fired the first two the game including the only goal of the opening frame. Another added by Brayden Low had the Rush up 3-0 at the end of 40 minutes.
Tim Coffman put the Aces on the board 96 seconds into the final period but Josh MacDonald restored the three-goal cushion for Rush at 3:01 and league leading scorer, Lindsay Sparks fired his seventh of the year about 10 minutes later to round out the scoring.
Kevin Carr made 28 saves in goal for the Aces.
Cyclones 4 at Monarchs 2
Shawn O’Donnell, Jordan Sims and Andrew Yogan all scored for the visiting Cyclones in a span of 3:56 to open up a 3-0 first period lead.
Joe Diamond and Cory Ward pulled back two for the Monarchs in the middle period before O’Donnell fired his second with 6:39 to play in the second, wrapping up the scoring in this one.
Mark Visentin picked up the win with 26 saves in goal for the Cyclones and Colin Stevens turned aside 25 in goal for the Monarchs.
Walleye 4 at Admirals 1
The Walleye also grabbed control earlier, jumping into a 3-0 first period lead with goals from Tylor Spink, Nolan Zajac and Dane Walters
Shane Berschbach added another late in the second period and Domenic Alberga gained a small consolation for the home team as his goal with under three minutes to play shattered the shutout bid of Walleye goaltender, Jake Patterson who made 32 saves.
Eetu Laurikainen made 18 saves in goal for the Admirals.
Americans 7 at Fuel 6 (ot)
Chad Costello‘s goal 38 seconds into overtime brought an end to a wild end to end game that saw teams combine for more than 80 shots and light the lamp 13 times.
Both teams scored twice in each period, Allen never trailing through the first two periods but the Walleye pushing in front twice in the third before Spencer Auschak‘s second of the night tied it at 6-6 with 47 seconds to go, setting the stage for Costello’s overtime heroics. Matt Willows also scored a pair for the Americans with others for Greger Hanson and Jake Marchment, the latter, a 21-year-old forward from Ontario who notched his first professional goal.
Jamie Murray made 37 saves to pick up the win in goal for the Americans.
Marek Tvrdon scored twice for the Fuel with other goals coming from: Patrick D’Amico, Tyler Currier, Kevin Lynch and Brady Ramsey.
Jake Hildebrand made 33 saves in goal for the Fuel.
Wings 1 at Nailers 8
Charlie Vasaturo scored just past the halfway mark of the first period to even the score at 1-1 for the visiting Wings, but the team never got a sniff of the lead after that, trailing 2-1 after a period and 4-1 heading to a third period that saw the home team pile on another four goals.
Josh Shalla scored three times for the Nailers and Derek Amy fired a pair with other goals coming from Kenton Miller, Garrett Meurs and Kevin Schulze.
Doug Carr made 22 saves to nail down the win for Wheeling and Nic Riopel handled 26 of 34 in goal for the Wings.
Sunday Games
The Cyclones will stay in Manchester to wrap up a weekend series with the Monarchs and the Rush will finish a three-game weekend set in Alaska. Other Midwest teams in play on Sunday will include: the Missouri Mavericks heading to Powerade Center north of the border to play the Brampton Beast and the Americans moving on to Kalamazoo’s Wings’ Event Center to face the Kalamazoo Wings.
