Training Camp wrap up — Chicago BlackHawks.

Following is a quick look at the 2014-15 Pre-Season Training camp for the NHL’s Chicago BlackHawks. It is my goal to provide more in depth daily information, but at this point I am playing catch up.

Here’s how things went leading up to the start of the 2014-15 NHL Season:

Sept. 19

The Hawks opened camp at the Compton Family Ice Center at Notre Dame University with 52 players — 27 forwards, 19 defensemen and six goaltenders.

Sept. 22

All 52 players moved into the United Center, beginning with a hugely attended Training Camp Festival on a Monday night that saw the Bears playing in NFL action. Clearly the excitement is still there for the team that won Cups in the 2012-13 and 2009-10 seasons.

Sept 23

Before its first pre-season contest, the Hawks made its first roster moves earlier in the day, assigning goaltenders Mac Caruth and Kent Simpson to the Rockford Ice Hogs and released forward Ryan Schnell along with Defensemen Kirill Gotovets, Justin Hall and Zach Miskovic. All are expected to report to the Ice Hogs.

That leaves 26 forwards, 16 defense and four goaltenders in camp — a total of 46 players.

Detroit 1 at Chicago 2 (ot)

Fresh from their huge off season season deals, the team’s stars looked after the scoring in this one; Patrick Kane tying it at 1-1 in the second with a backhand shot with help from newcomer Brad Richards and Duncan Keith. In the overtime period, Captain Jonathan Toews notched the game winner with a tip in of a shot by Duncan Keith.

Luke Glendening triggered the lone Red Wings goal on a tip with assists for Danny Dekeyser and Jakub Kindl.

Scott Darling (31:14 8/8) and Corey Crawford (31:47 13/14) split the work in goal for the Hawks while Jonas Gustavsson (40:00 11/12) and Petr Mrazek (23:01 6/7) each took a turn for the Wings.

Sept. 25

Chicago 2 at Detroit 3

In the return game at Joe Louis a couple of nights earlier, the Wings avenged the earlier one goal defeat with a narrow win.

Tomas Tatar deflected a shot in for the lone goal of the first, from Jonathan Ericsson and Riley Sheahan and there was no scoring in the middle frame.

Tomas Nosek’s backhander doubled the margin, from Justin Abdelkader and Andrej Nestrasil in the opening minute of the third, but Bryan Bickell responded with the first Hawk’tally at the 6:28 mark, burying a wrister with assists for Viktor Svedberg adn Jeremy Morin.

Nestrasil added some insurance just past the halfway mark on a backhander from Nosek and Abdelkader and Garret Ross’ backhand goal with 50 seconds to go, from Nick Leddy and Peter Regin was too little, too late for the Hawks,

For the Hawks Antii Raanta (31:23 21/22) and Michael Leighton (27:47 17/19) both saw action while Jimmy Howard went the distance and picked up the win for the Wings with 26 saves.

Sept. 26

The Hawks made some more moves assigning forwards Alex Broadhurst, Drew LeBlanc and Mark McNeill along with defensemen Matheu Brisebois, Dillon Fournier and Viktor Svedberg to Rockford.

That leaves 23 forwards, 13 defensemen and four goaltenders still in camp for a total of 40 players.

NY Rangers 4 at Chicago 1

The Hawks dropped another pre-season test, falling to the visiting Rangers at the United Center.

The Rangers opened up a 2-0 first period lead with on a wrist shot goal by Oscar Lindberg (Lee Stempniak, Conor Allen) just 50 seconds into the contest and another wrister b Anthony Duclair (Rick Nash, Derick Brassard) just past the halfway mark.

Dennis Rasmussen scored the lone middle period goal with a wrist shot after a feed from Phillip Danault.

A powerplay goal by J.T. Miller who tipped a shot past Crawford 13:58 in from John Moore and Duclair restored the two goal margin and another goal about three minutes later on a wrist shot by Marek Hrivik put this one away.

Crawford handled 25 of 29 shots in goal for the Hawks while Henrik Lundqvist (29:37 15/16) and Cedrick Desjardins (30:23 15/15) split the work for the Rangers.

Sept. 27

The Hawks assigned Forwards Matt Carey and Phillip Danault along with defenseman Stephen Johns to Rockford while also releasing defenseman Cam Barker. That left 21 forwards, 11 defensemen and four goaltenders in camp.

Sept. 28

 Chicago 5 at Edmonton 0

The Hawks traveled to Oil town and picked up an impressive shutout win, backstopped by Scott Darling’s 22-save shutout effort in goal.

Bryan Bickell scored the lone first period goal with second period markers added by Garret Ross and Teuvo Teravainen and two more down the stretch from Andrew Shaw and Kris Versteeg.

Sept. 29

The Hawks made a few more moves, assigning forwards Joakim Nordstrom, Dennis Rasmussen, Garret Ross and defensemen Adam Clendenning and Klas Dahlbeck to Rockford along with goaltender Scott Darling. That leaves 18 forwards, nine defenders and three goaltenders still in camp.

Sept. 30

The Hawks assigned forwards Cody Bass and Pierre-Cedric Labrie to Rockford. That leaves 16 forwards, nine defense and three goaltenders still in camp.

Oct. 1

Montreal 3 at Chicago 1

The Hawks fell to 1-3 in pre-season play with a loss at the United Center to the Canadiens.

All of the scoring took place in the third period, beginning with a goal by Montreal’s Rene Bourque 4:03 into the frame and another from  Nathan Beaulieu just 1:54 later.

Andrew Shaw pulled one back with his wrist shot goal with 5:53 to play from Brandon Saad but any thoughts of a comeback were extinguished with an empty net goal by Michael Bournival for Montreal with just under a minute to go.

Carey Price made 31 saves to nail down the win in goal for the Habs while Antii Raanta stopped 16 of 18 going the distance for the Hawks.

Oct. 2

Forward Ryan Hartman was assigned to Rocford while the Hawks also recalled defenseman Klas Dahlbbeck and Daniel Carcillo was picked up on waivers and added to the lineup.

That leaves 16 forwards, 10 defense and three goaltenders still in camp.

Oct. 3

Chicago 2 at NY Rangers 3 (so)

The Hawks made the trip to New York and dropped its fourth straight pre-season game, but this time went to a shootout that wasn’t settled until 18 shooters had a turn.

Again teams were scoreless through a period, the Rangers opening the scoring on a Martin St. Louis tip in 5:02 into the second.

Patrick Kane tied it on a powerplay with a slap shot, assisted by Michael Kostk and Brent Seabord at the 14:05 and the Hawks moved in front just over two minutes later on a snapshot by Andrew Shaw with help from Kane and Brandon Saad.

The Rangers pulled even with 4:29 to go on a Ryan Malone snap shot and that tie carried over through regulation as well as the five minute overtime segment.

Through the original three shooters shootout, Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp were both stopped by Henrik Lunqvist before Teuvo Teravainen scored the in the third round to counter Mats Zucarello’s opening goal. Corey Crawford was beat on that, but then stopped Anthony Duclair and Martin St. Louis to give his team a chance.

Jeremy Morin, Ben Smith, Andrew Shaw, Kris Versteeg and Brandon Saad all had a chance before Ryan Malone put this one away in the eighth round. Bryan Bickell was the Hawk’s eighth round shooter.

Oct. 4

The Hawks agreed to terms with Daniel Carcillo on the same day that forward Teuvo Teravainen  and defenseman Klas Dahlbeck were sent to Rockford, leaving 15 forwards, nine defense and three goaltenders still in came.

On the same day, the suspense finally ended as to who was going to be dealt to get the team under the salary cap. Promising young defender Nick Leddy and goaltender Nick Simpson were traded to the NY Islanders for prospects including defensemen T.J. Brennan and Ville Pokka as well as rights to Restricted Free Agent goaltender Anders Nilsson.

Brennan and Pokka were sent immediately to Rockford and Nilsson will remain with Ak Bars of the Kontinental Hockey League.

These moves leave 15 forwards, eight defense and three goaltenders still in camp.

Oct. 5

With the regular season looming, the Hawks assisgned forward Peter Regin and goaltender Michael Leighton to Rockford leaving 14 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders in camp.

Oct. 7

The final roster shuffle of the pre-season saw the team placing forward Brandon Mashinter on the Injured Reserve List, Retroactive to Oct. 1 leaving 13 forwards, eight defense and two goaltenders in camp. The team is now two days away from opening the regular season at Dallas.
