Steel wraps up 2017-18 Camp with All-Star match

GENEVA, ILLINOIS (Courtesy Chicago Steel) — The 2017 Chicago Steel Main Camp closed Monday with a featured All-Star Game, as 38 selected players showcased their skills in front of Steel coaches and staff, as well as a variety of NCAA scouts.

Players participating in the game included three 2017 Phase I Draft picks, 11 2017 Phase II Draft picks, and seven players who appeared in at least one game for the Steel in the 2016-2017 season.

Black defeated Red, 7-1. The line of returning forward Blake McLaughlin (0G+4A), tender signee Robert Mastrosimone (2G+0A), and Phase II second-overall pick Jack Dugan (1G+2A) led the way offensively for Black. Goaltender Derek Schaedig (Gregory, MI/Harvard University), a Phase II first-round selection, stopped 23 of 24 shots in the victory.

Black jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first period thanks to tallies from Dugan (Pittsford, NY/Providence College), Jack Clement (Bloomfield Hills, MI/uncommitted) and Mastrosimone (East Islip, NY/Boston University).

In the second period, Black increased their lead to 5-0 with goals from defenseman Thomas Keene (Homer Glen, IL/uncommitted) and forward CJ Walker (Boise, ID/Minnesota State University, Mankato).

Schaedig’s shutout bid came to an end with less than two minutes remaining in the second period, as forward Nick Abruzzese (Slate Hill, NY/University of Vermont), a recent trade acquisition of the Steel, got Red on the board, trailing 5-1 at the intermission.

In the third period, Mastrosimone recorded his second goal of the afternoon, then defenseman Brendan Mark (Grand Rapids, MN/uncommitted) added the game’s final marker, as Black skated to a six-goal win.

The Chicago Steel will return to the ice in October as the defending Clark Cup Champions. For more information, stop by the Box Office at Fox Valley Ice Arena, call 855-51-STEEL, or visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
