Spirit coach, Carbery moves to AHL’s Bruins

SAGINAW, Mich. – Saginaw Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill announced Tuesday (July 25, 2017) that Head Coach Spencer Carbery has accepted a new role as an assistant coach with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.

“I want to congratulate Spencer Carbery on his career advancement,” said Drinkill. “We feel we have made large strides in creating the culture we want here in Saginaw, and look to continue that in the near future.”

Carbery was head coach of the Spirit for one season, joining the team in June 2016 after spending five seasons as Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations of the South Carolina Stingrays, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals.

The Victoria, British Columbia native played parts of four pro seasons in the erstwhile Central Hockey League and the ECHL, winning the Kelly Cup Championship during the 2008-09 season with the South Carolina Stingrays. While coaching the Stingrays in 2014-15, South Carolina won 23-consecutive games, and including 13 wins consecutively on the road, both remain an ECHL record.

The entire Saginaw Spirit organization wishes Spencer Carbery the best of luck moving forward and has begun the process of finding the team’s next head coach.
