Red Wings trim roster to 57

After the Traverse City portion of its 2015-16 Training Camp, the Detroit Red Wings cut loose 15 players — sending four youngsters to their respective junior camps and releasing 11 others.

Vili Saarijarvi has impressed at the Prospects Tournament, collecting some points, but the Wings allowed the Russian defender, selected by them just his past summer a chance to get his season underway with the Flint Firehawks as they work toward opening the OHL regular season on Thursday (Sept. 24).

Also Joe Hickets, 19 was signed by the Wings as a free agent last year and he will return for another year for another season as captain of the Victoria Royals in the WHL.

Adam Marsh, an 18-year-old forward from Chicago was Selected by the Wings in the Seventh Round (200th Overall)  in the 2015 NHL Entry draft and he leaves his first pro camp, heading to a second season with the Saint John Sea Dogs in the QMJHL.

Dominic Turgeon, a 19-year-old forward from Quebec was Selected by the Wings in the Third Round (63rd Overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and the son of former NHL player Pierre Turgeon will head back to his position as Assistant Captain on the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL.

Nick Betz, 20, from Mount Clemens, MI; Triston Grant, from Manitoba, a 2004 Ninth Round (286th Overall) Selection of the Philadelphia Flyers; Conor McGlynn, a 20-year-old from Ontario; Evan Polei, 21, from Alberta and Jerome Verrier, 21, from Quebec were all invited to camp on a tryout basis as forwards

Also, defensemen: Jalen Chatfield, 19, from Ypsilanti, MI; Jarrett Meyer, 18, from New York; Justin Lemcke, 18, from Ontario and Ty Stanton, 20, from Alberta were invited on a tryout basis.

Goaltenders Matt Mancina, 19, from Ontario and Connor Ingram, 18, from Saskatchewan were also invites.

Almost all of these players are still eligible to play junior hockey and return next year for another shot.

With the roster trim, the Red Wings have 57 players remaining in camp including 34 forwards; 18 defensemen and five goaltenders.
