Prospects lead Wings past Leafs

A pair of young hopefuls still in camp scored the goals to lead the Wings to a 2-1 win at the Air Canada Center in Toronto in its final pre-season contest Saturday (Oct. 3).

After a scoreless first period, Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha both notched goals in the second period and that was enough for the Wings to collect a 2-1 win against the host Toronto Maple Leafs.

Brad Boyes scored the lone Toronto goal 22 seconds into the third period as Petr Mrazek wrapped up the pre-season with a 28 save winning effort in goal for the Wings. He and Jimmy Howard will be the regular goaltenders for the Wings this season. They question is who will be the go-to guy?

While that decision appears easy, there are tons of others still be made by the Wings as they still have a large number of players in camp and will need to send several to Grand Rapids in the next few days before opening its regular season Friday (Oct. 9) against the same Leafs at the Joe Louis Arena.

Jonathan Bernier turned aside 13 shots for the Leafs.

Mantha and Athanasiou both assisted on the other’s goals and other helpers went to Tyler Bertuzzi and Xavier Ouellet.

The Wings wrapped up the pre-season with a record of six wins and two overtime losses.
