Kielly shutout leads Storm past Steel

Jake Kielly, 19, from Eden Prairie, MN stopped all 31 of the shots he faced to help lead the United States Hockey League’s Tri-City Storm to a 2-0 win at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Chicago Saturday (Oct. 3).

In other league action on the same day: Youngstown Phantoms doubled the Bloomington Thunder 4-2 on home ice; Team USA grabbed a 6-3 road win at Muskegon against the Lumberjacks; Cedar Rapids Roughriders downed visiting Madison Capitols 5-1; Omaha Lancers collected a 6-1 road win at Des Moines agaisnt the Buccaneers, Dubuque Fighting Saints earned a 3-2 edge at Green Bay against the Gamblers; Sioux City Musketeers got by the visiting Sioux Falls Stampede 5-3 and Waterloo Blackhawks downed the visiting Fargo Force 5-1.

Storm 2 at Steel 0

Teams were scoreless after 40 minutes and John Marino finally got the Tri City Storm on the board against the Chicago Steel 3:12 into the final period on a powerplay. The only goal was scored by Carson Meyer, 18, from Powell, OH into an empty Steel goal with just three seconds to play.

John Lethemon, 19, from Northville, MI handled all but one of the 25 shots he faced in goal for the Steel.

Next up for Tri-City will be a game on home ice Friday (Oct. 9) against Cedar Rapids and the Steel will be on the road in Plymouth, MI to play Team USA.

Thunder 2 at Phantoms 4

Two unanswered middle period tallies made the difference in this one for the host Youngstown Phantoms against the Bloomington Thunder as both teams scored single markers in the first and final periods.

Thunder opened and closed the scoring, Mitchell Mattson, 17, from Grand Rapids, MN openign the scoring with 2:13 to play in the opening frame on a powerplay only to have Patrick Kramer, 18, from Massachusetts respond 75 seconds later for the Phantoms.

Alex Esposito, 19, from Connecticut put the Phantoms in front to stay with a penalty shot goal 4:13 from the end of the middle frame and Cameron Morrison, 17, from Ontario upped the margin with his goal 1:53 later. Lukas Craggs, 19, from Elmhurst, IL gave the hosts a 4-1 cushion 7:25 into the final period before Tarek Baker, 18, from Madison clsoed out the scoring for the Thunder with a powerplay 67 seconds from the final buzzer.

Ryan Bednard, 18, from Macomb, MI stopped 35 shots to pick up the win for the Phantoms and Hayden Lavigne, 19, from Ontario, turned aside 29 in goal for the Thunder.

Thunder will be back in action Friday (Oct. 9) at Sioux City to play the Musketeers and the Phantoms will entertain the Chicago Steel the following evening.

Team USA 6 at Lumberjacks 3

The USA National Development Team (U-17) appeared to grab control of the contest with four unanswered first period tallies, but the Muskegon Lumberjacks rallied with two in the second and another early in the third at the L.C. Walker Arena.

But 1:58 later Team USA notched its fifth goal and another a few minutes later had the All Stars comfortably in front again.

Michael Pastujov, 16, from Florida paced Team USA with a goal and two assists and Quinn Hughes, 16, from Florida collected two assists. Other Team USA goals came from: Joey Cassetti, 16, from California; Brady Tkachuk, 16, from St. Louis, MO; Jason Dhooghe, 16, from Aurora, IL; Grant Mismash, 16, from Edina, MN and Logan Cockerill, 16, from Brighton MI.

Lumberjack goals came from: Mitch Eliot, 17, from Grosse Pointe, MI; Collin Adams, 17, from Brighton, MI and Dante Palecco, 17, from New Jersey.

Adam Scheel, 16, from Lakewood, OH turned in a 56-save effort to grab the win for Team USA and the Lumberjacks split the work, Joey Daccord, 19, from Massachusettx playing the first 7:32 before Devin Cooley, 18, from California took over. Both surrendered three goals, Daccord stopping two and Cooley turning aside 10.

Team USA will play next on home ice against the Chicago Steel Friday (Oct. 9) and the Lumberjacks will be at Madison to play the Capitols on Saturday (Oct. 10).

Capitols 1 at Roughriders 5

Ryan Lohin, 19, from Pennsylvania, had the Madison Capitols on the board quick, but his unassisted marker in the game’s fifth minute was the only shot out of 23 faced by Ryan Larkin, 18, from Clarkston, MI in goal for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The Roughriders charged back with three goals of its own by the end of the first and one more in the other two periods to pull away.

Hugh McGing, 17, from Chicago scored a goal and set up another for the Roughriders, Callahan Burke, 18 from Massachusetts adding two assists and other goals scored by: Matt Filipe, 18, from Massachusetts; Ross Colton, 19, from New Jersey; Luke Morgan, 18, from Brighton, MI and Matt Gosiewski, 17, from Connecticut.

Garrett Metcalf, 19, from Utah stopped four of seven through the first 8:36 before Ryan Edquist, 17, from Lakeville, MN took over, stopping 23 of 25 the rest of the way.

The Capitols will be on home ice Friday (Oct. 9) hosting the Green Bay Gamblers and the Roughriders will play a rare Thursday (Oct. 8) night game at Fargo.

Lancers 6 at Buccaneers 1

Omaha Lancers grabbed a 2-0 first period lead at the Buccaneer Arena at Des Moines and added one more in the middle frame. The Bucs trailed 4-0 when Georgy Gorodetsky, 20, from Russia, fired the only shot of 34 that beat Kris Oldham, 18, from Alaska, in goal for the Lancers who added two more after that Dubuque tally.

Johan Steen, 19, from Texas; Jacob Bryson, 18, from Ontario; Austin Alger, 18, from Livonia, MI and Michael Montambault, 18, from Ann Arbor, MI each collected a goal and assist for the Lancers and JC McLean, 18, from New Jersey collected three assists. Hank Crone, 17, from Texas and Matt Meier, 20, from Colorado had the other Omaha goals.

Jan Ruzicka, 18, from Czech Republic made 30 saves in goal for the Buccaneers.

The same two teams will be in action again Friday (Oct. 9), this time the Bucs visiting Omaha.

Fighting Saints 3 at Gamblers 2

Colin Theisen, 18, from Monroe, MI fired the only goal of the third period at the 7:32, breaking a 2-2 tie and sending the visiting Dubuque Fighting Saints to a 3-2 win against the host Green Bay Gamblers at the Resch Center.

The Fighting Saints opened up a 2-0 lead with a pair of unanswered first period goals by Keegan Ford, 19, from Waunakee, WI and Spenser Young, 18, from New Hampshire, but the Gamblers struck back with a pair of its own in the second period from Karch Bachman, 18, from Wolcotville, IN and Joey Marooney, 19, from Eden Prairie, MN, setting the stage for Theissen’s game winner.

Jaxon Castor, 18, from Arizona made 32 saves to pick up the win in goal for the Fighting Saints and Adam Huska, 18, from Slovakia turned aside 21 shots in goal for the Gamblers.

The Fighting Saints will be on the road again Friday (Oct. 9) making the trip to Lincoln to play the Stars while the Gamblers will also hit the road to play at Madison against the Capitols on the same night.

 

Stampede 3 at Musketeers 5

The Sioux City Musketeers opened up a 2-0 first period on home ice at the Tyson Events Center and added another early in the second before the visiting Sioux Falls Stampede struck back with a pair. The Musketeers scored one more before the end of the period and both teams scored once in the third as well.

Teemu Pulkkinen, 20, from Finland scored twice for the host Musketeers and Eeli Tolvanen, 16, from Finland collected three assists. Other Musketeer goals came from: Matt Steeves, 18, from New Hampshire; CJ Dodero, 18, from Colorado and Jake Durflinger, 18, from California.

Parker Tuomie, 20, from Germany; Chaz Switzer, 18, from Muskegon, MI and Ryan Brushett, 17, from Quebec each collected one goal for the Stampede.

Cameron Gornet, 20, from St. Louis, MO made 37 saves to collect the win in goal for the Musketeers and Ales Stezka, 18, from Czech Republic, turned aside 34 in goal for the Stampede.

The Musketeers will play host to the Bloomington Thunder Friday (Oct. 9) and the Stampede’s next game will be at Fargo, on the same night.

Force 1 at Blackhawks 5

The visiting Fargo Force trailed 4-0 when Zach Yon, 20, from Roseau, MN finally managed to find a way past Waterloo Blackhawks goaltender, Cale Morris, 19, from Colorado in the third period  at the Young Arena. The Hawks put it away with one more into an empty net with four ticks on the clock.

Marshall Moise, 18, from St. Clair Shore, MI picked up a goal and assist to pace the Waterloo attack and Brandon Schultz, 19, from Florida picked up a couple of assists. Other Blackhawk goals came from: Ryley Risling, 19, from Alberta, Cameron Orchard, 17, from Dorr, MI; Nick Swaney, 18, from Lakeville, MN and Yuri Terao, 20, from Japan.

Robbie Beydoun, 19, from Plymouth, MI stopped four of seven through the first 14:29 for the Force with Ryan Wischow, 19, from Green Bay, WI coming on for the final 43:31  and handling 15 of 16.

The Force will play on Thursday (Oct. 8) at home against the Cedar Rapids Roughriders and the Blackhawks will play next on Saturday (Oct. 10) at Green Bay.
