Frk’s early goal leads Griffins to opening game win over Wolves

Martin Frk scored just 40 seconds in and sent the Grand Rapids Griffins on its way to a 4-1 win at Allstate Arena against the host Chicago Wolves in the opening game of their Best of Seven American Hockey League Central Division Final series Wednesday (May 3, 2017).

The win is the fourth straight for the Griffins in the post season as they dispatched the Milwaukee Admirals in the opening round in three straight games. The Wolves on the other hand went the five-game distance to get past the Charlotte Checkers in the opening round.

Frk added an assist later in the period as Matthew Ford scored to open a 2-0 cushion but Kenny Agostino pulled one back for the Wolves just over a minute later and the 2-1 cushion held into both the first and second intermissions.

Tomas Nosek fired his third of the post season 3:48 into the third to widen the gap and Ben Street wrapped it up with the fourth Griffins’ goal into an empty net with 1:51 to play. Tyler Bertuzzi and Nathan Paetsch both picked up two assists in the game for the Griffs.

Jared Coreau collected the win in goal for the Griffins with a 27-save effort and Ville Husso made 31 saves in goal for the Wolves.

Game Two in the series will also be played at the Allstate Arena on Friday (May 5).
