Firebirds can’t find a way past Helvig

The Flint Firebirds‘ Eastern Ontario swing hit another pothole on Friday (Oct. 28) as Jeremy Helvig, 19, from Markham, ON was unbeatable in goal for the host Kingston Frontenacs in a 3-0 Ontario Hockey League win at the Rogers K-Rock Center in Kingston.

It was the second loss in 24 hours for the Firebirds who started the trip in Peterborough Thursday night, falling 4-2 to the Peterborough Petes.

Helvig turned aside all of the 22 shots he faced while Flint goaltender, Connor Hicks, 19, from Kanata, ON was beaten three times on 19 shots.

Linus Nyman, 17, from Finland and Liam Murray, 19, from Orleans, ON both fired first period goals for the Fronts with Stephen Desrocher, 20, from Toronto,  adding the other in the middle frame.

The loss dropped the Firebirds back to the .500 plateau at 7-7-0-1 and the team will wrap up its only trip to eastern Ontario this season on Sunday (Oct. 30) when it visits the Ottawa 67’s at TD Place.

Meanwhile, the Saginaw Spirit will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 29) with a game against the Erie Otters at Erie Insurance Arena.
