Dekeyser out — Green in for Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings announced Friday (Oct. 2) that defenseman Danny DeKeyser would likely miss the next three weeks or so of action with a strained ligament in his foot.

The injury was suffered late in the game Wednesday (Sept. 30) against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

However, the bad news was mixed with good as it appears defenseman Mike Green is ready to return from a groin injury also suffered earlier in the pre-season.

In other Wing’s news from the same day:

The team has reassigned veteran goaltender Tom McCollum to the Grand Rapids Griffins while at the same time recalling another goaltender, Jake Paterson, back to Motown.

McCollum, a 25-year-old, 6’5,” 227 lbs. goaltender from Amherst, NY was a First Round (30th Overall) selection by the Wings at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. After wrapping up his junior career with Guelph and Brampton of the Ontario Hockey League, McCollum turned pro in 2009-10. Since then he has played exclusively with the Wings’ organization, mostly at the American Hockey League level with some NHL and ECHL games as well.

Last season, McCollum appeared in 37 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, posting a 2.40 Goals Against Average and a .916 Save Percentage, as well as two games with the Wings where he impressed with an 0.91 Goals Against Average and .961 Save Percentage.

Wings also signed its 2015 First Round Draft Pick (19th Overall), Evgeny Svechnikov to a three-year entry level contract. The 18-year-old, 6’2,” 198 lbs. native of Neftegorsk, Russia started camp with the Wings and was returned to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for a second season. Svechnikov helped Russia to a Silver Medal Performance at the World Junior Championships last year and will likely be a part of the same team at this year’s event at Helsinki in December.
