Bulls wrap up weekend sweep at Chicago

The defending national champion North Iowa Bulls pounded the host Chicago Bulldogs for a third straight day to wrap up a successful road trip.

The Bulls grabbed an 8-0 shutout win to wrap up a three game sweep by a total margin of 32-2 in one of two NA3HL games involving Midwest-based teams on Sunday (Sept. 27). In the other game, the Wisconsin Whalers earned a weekend split with the Peoria Mustangs, capturing a 5-2 win on the road.

Bulls 8 at Bulldogs 0

After grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Bulls put a stranglehold on the host Bulldogs at the Romeoville Arena with another four unanswered second period goals. Two more down the stretch rounded out the scoring in this one.

Kadin Machusak, 18, from Eau Claire led the offense with three goals and an assist and David Min, 19, from Washington also notched a hat trick.

Daylon DeSouza, 19, from Eau-Claire, WI; Marshall Barnes, 18, from Edina, MN and Brett Gravelle, 19, from Forest Lake, MN each collected three assists in the game; Tom Lindgren, 20, from Janesville adding a goal and assist and the other goal scored by Tommy Stang, 18, from Mendota Heights, MN.

Tommi Ahlgren, 20, from Finland stopped all 22 of the shots he faced to pick up the shutout win in goal for the Bulls while Jimmy Smith, 19, from Texas made 41 saves in goal for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday (Oct. 3) playing host to the La Crosse Freeze and the Bulls have next weekend off, returning to action Oct. 9 at Breezy Point against the North Stars.

Whalers 5 at Mustangs 2 

After falling to the Peoria Mustangs in a home game Friday, the Wisconsin Whalers returned the favor Sunday with a 5-2 win at the Owens Rec Center in Peoria.

Both teams scored once in the opening period before the Whalers took control with a pair of unanswered middle period markers. The Mustangs got to within one with 9:36 to play but could get no closer. The Whalers widened the gap with two into an empty Mustang goal in the game’s final 90 seconds.

Peter Henderson, 20 from Libertyville, IL paced the Whalers attack with two goals, Nathan Viberg, 19, from Orland Park, IL adding a goal and assist and Jake McNamara, 19, from Grand Rapids, MI setting up a pair. Other Whalers goals came from Austin Lewis, 19, from Rockford, IL and Ben Ratner, from Elk Grove, Village, IL.

Michael Butera, 18, from Roscoe, IL and Austin Wisely, 19, from Chillicothe, IL had the Mustang goals.

Evan Moyse, 19, from Olmstead Twp., OH stopped 34 shots to grab the win for the Whalers and Ross Lipic, 19, from Forsyth, IL made 22 saves in goal for the Mustangs.

The Whalers and Mustangs will both hit the road for games Friday (Oct. 2) as the Whalers travel to Granite City to face the Lumberjacks and the Mustangs make the trip to Nashville to faceoff against the Jr. Preds.
