Playing primarily for pride, the Kansas City Mavericks denied the visiting Utah Grizzlies a chance to move closer to securing an ECHL Western Conference playoff spot with a 5-2 victory at Cable Dahmer Arena Thursday (May 27).

Mavs scored first, Jared Van Wormer (‘92/Traverse City, Mich.) pulling the trigger in the game’s third minute but the Grizzlies pulled even on a goal from Cedric Pare (‘99/Levis, Que.) late in the frame.

Two goals in the first 3:26 of the middle frame had the home side up 3-2 and two more in the final frame wrapped up the offence.

Brodie Reid (‘89/Delta, B.C.), just added from the team’s Reserve squad, fired the game winner for the Mavericks with others for Rob Bordson (‘88/Duluth, Minn.); Boston Leier (‘93/Saskatoon, Sask.) and Willie Corrin (‘91/International Falls, Minn.) into an empty net.

Sasha Mutala (‘01/Vancouver, B.C.) scored the other Grizzlies goal.

The win boosted the Mavericks to 28-29-8-2 and they remain seventh in the seven-team Western Conference, within three points of the sixth place Tulsa Oilers with one less game played and two behind the Rapid City Rush who have played one less game.

The Grizzlies sit at 33-23-5-6 for 77 points in fourth spot, now nine points up on the Rush.

The Mavericks will host the Grizzlies again on both Friday and Saturday – both games getting underway at 7:05 p.m.
