Canucks even series with Wild

After failing to get one past Alex Stalock in the opening contest, the Vancouver Canucks fired its first goal of the series just 24 seconds in against the Minnesota Wild last night (August 4, 2020).

A pair of late Kevin Fiala goals made things interesting, but the Canucks held on for a 4-3 edge and evened the Best of Five Western Conference Qualification Series at a win apiece.

Teams were almost even on shots through the first 40 minutes, and a Luke Kunin goal late in the opening period had teams even at 1-1.

The Canucks fired a pair of unanswered second period goals and added a fourth in the seventh minute of the final period.

Fiala scored with 2:29 to go and pulled the Wild within one with his third goal of the series nine seconds from the final buzzer.

Tanner Pearson scored the first Canucks’ tally with middle period markers from J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser. Bo Horvat padded the lead with his third period goal.

While Stalock was back after a shutout in the opener, the Canucks also returned Jacob Markstrom to the crease.

Fiala led all shooters, scoring twice on six shots while Elias Petterson and Horvat both fired five for the Canucks.

Ryan Suter (25:41) once again led on ice time for the Wild but there were four defensemen who topped 20 minutes including: Matt Dumba (24:32); Jared Spurgeon (22:41) and Josh Brodin (20:55).

For the Canucks Alex Edler (24:06) led the way with Quinn Hughes (22:39) and Chris Tanev (21:17) close behind. Forwards Horvat (22:11) and Miller (20:12) also crossed 20 minutes for the Canucks.

Game three in this series will be played Thursday (Aug. 6) afternoon at 1:30 in Edmonton with a fourth game scheduled for the following day.
