DeBrincat goal lifts Hawks Prospects past Wings 4-3 at Traverse City tourney
Alex De Brincat’s goal with 3:25 to go lifted the BlackHawks Prospects to a 4-3 win in its Gordie Howe Division game against the Detroit Red Wings Prospects at the Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup Tournament at Traverse City on Saturday (Sept. 9, 2017).
Both the Hawks and Wings were coming off previous day defeats and the momentum shifted back and forth by the period in this one.
The other Gordie Howe Division match saw the New York Rangers Prospects shutout by the now 2-0 Carolina Hurricanes Prospects 4-0.
Ted Lindsay Division play saw the Columbus Blue Jackets Prospects stay perfect with a 3-1 win against the Minnesota Wild Prospects while the St. Louis Blues went to overtime to win a wild one 7-6 against the Dallas Stars.
BlackHawks 4 Red Wings 3
The Hawks carried a 1-0 lead out of the opening 20 minutes, Michael Cramarossa, 21, from Ontario collecting the Chicago goal.
The Red Wings charged back in the middle frame with goals from Dylan Sadowy, 21, from Ontario, a Third Round (81st Overall) selection by the Wings at the 2014 NHL Draft; Lane Zablocki, 18, from Alberta, a Third Round (79th Overall) pick by the Wings at the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and Dennis Cholowski, 19, from British Columbia, a First Round (20th Overall) Pick by the Wings at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Chicago had one by Defenseman Darren Raddysh, 21, from Ontario sandwiched in between and trailed 3-2 with a period to go.
Carl Dahlstrom, 22, from Sweden, a Second Round selection (51st Overall) by the Hawks in 2013 evened the score near the halfway mark of the third setting the stage for DeBrincat, 19, from Farmington Hills, MI, a Second Round (39th Overall) pick by the Hawks in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. The skilled forward notched his second goal and third point of the tournament for the win.
Matt Tomkins, 23, from Alberta, a Seventh Round (199th Overall) selection of the Hawks at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, kicked out 23 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Hawks while Kaden Fulcher, 18, from Ontario, stopped 34 shots in goal for the Wings.
The other game for the Howe Division is the only one of a dozen that had no Midwest-region involvement, the Canes shutting out the Ranges.
Blues 7 Stars 6 (ot)
Thomas Vannelli, 22, from Minnetonka, lifted the Blues to victory 4:12 into overtime with the 13th and final goal in a wild game. Vannelli, a Second Round (47th Overall) Selection by the Blues at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, was the seventh different goal scorer in the game for the Blues.
The high-octane play started quick the first of five first period goals scored just before the five-minute mark by Adam Musil, 20, from British Columbia, a Fourth Round (94th Overall) selection by the Blues at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and wrapped up with just under four minutes to go by Aleksey Toropchenko, 18, from Russia, selected in the Third Round (113th Overall) by the Blues in June.
In between those two were a trio of Stars goals, scored by: Samuel Laberge, 20, from Quebec, Shaw Boomhower, 18, from Ontario and Brett Davis, 18, from Manitoba, selected in the Sixth Round (163rd Overall) by the Stars in June.
Jordan Kyrou, 19, from Ontario, a Second Round (35th Overall) pick by the Blues at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft pulled the Blues even at 3-3 with 6:05 to go in the second period, but the Stars struck back with two more, scored by Ondrej Vala, 19, from Czech Republic and Tomas Soustal, 20, from Czech Republic, widening the gap to 5-3 with a period to play.
Sheldon Dries, 23, from Macomb County, WI had the Stars up by three before the five-minute mark of the final period before the Blues charged back with three goals in 4:20 to push the game to overtime.
Klim Kostin, 18, from Russia, a First Round Pick (31st Overall) of the Blues at the 2017 NHL Draft scored his third of the tournament with 6:49 to go and Jake Walman, 21, from Ontario, a Third Round (82nd Overall) selection by the Blues at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft had his team within a goal a little over two minutes later.
One of the top Blues’ prospects, 19-year-old Tage Thompson from Arizona, a First Round (26th Overall) pick by the Blues at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, scored the equalizer with 2:29 to play, setting the stage for Vannelli’s overtime heroics.
Goaltenders were roughed up in this one, but Evan Fitzpatrick, 19, from Nova Scotia, a Second Round (59th Overall) pick by the Blues at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft stopped 12 shots and Landon Bow, 22, from Alberta handled 20 for the Stars.
Blue Jackets 3 Wild 1
Blue Jackets are the favorite to capture top spot in the Lindsay Division after capturing a 3-1 win against the Minnesota Wild in a battle of opening game winners.
After a scoreless first period, the Jackets scored the first two in the second and carried a 2-1 cushion into the third.
Hayden Hodgson, 21, from Ontario scored his second of the game with just under five minutes to go to clinch the win for the Blue Jackets.
Jordan Maletta, 22, from Ontario scored the other Blue Jackets’ marker and Dante Salituro, 20, from Ontario, had the lone Wild marker.
Ivan Kulbakov, 20, from Belarus, handled 29 of 30 shots faced in goal for the Blue Jackets to pick up the win and Dereck Baribeau, 20, from Quebec, made 21 saves in goal for the Wild.
